Under the Megacities Indicator System (MIS), a joint project of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), EMI, Karlsruhe Technical University (KIT) and Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI), the findings of a detailed socio-economic survey were presented and discussed in a workshop held in Istanbul on June 23, 2014. The survey included 50 districts (mahales) considered to be highly vulnerable to Earthquakes grouping about 8000 households. The parameters of the survey will be used to formulate the socio-economic fragility as well as the coping capacity in the MIS.
The participants recognized that this is a uniquely valuable data that could have many DRR applications. The provided input on how the data can be improved and analyzed prior to launching a full scale data gathering effort for the entire Istanbul.
EMI Chairman and Executive Director Dr. Bendimerad made a presentation entitled “Why Indicators” stressing the relevance of indicators in DRR and showing examples from other cities.
A follow up workshop is planned for August 2014.
