In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI) will co-organize an International Earthquake Conference on November 12-14, 2008. The three-day conference will bring to light the various initiatives undertaken by Los Angeles and other major cities around the globe in the areas of policy, planning, mitigation and preparedness. Academics, policy-makers, disaster managers, emergency responders, and other stakeholders have been invited to present sound practices and policies, new ideas, and cutting-edge technologies that reduce earthquake risk and minimize losses. They will discuss both policy and planning approaches, as well as present actual tools for earthquake preparedness and disaster response. The conference will also provide the platform for demonstrating knowledge of sound practices in earthquake risk reduction that other cities may validate, adapt, and apply in their own context. All attendees will take a trip during the conference to observe different venues, such as emergency response centers, schools, major businesses, and other institutions, participating in the Great Southern California ShakeOut Drill on Nov. 13. Additionally, there will be an information exchange session - the Share Fair - in which invited cities and institutions will be engaged in a one-on-one interaction to discuss their respective earthquake programs. This will provide the peer-to-peer learning environment for cities around the world to benefit from each other’s experiences and capabilities in implementing programs that reduce earthquake risk.
