EMI and Ciudad Mexico, D.F., in partnership with El Colegio de Mexico, the ProVention Consortium, the United Nations Development Programme [UNDP/BCPR], the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) are organizing the Americas Megacities Forum 2007. The Forum is a contribution to the local implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action.

A number of local authorities and local government institutions are committed and engaged in the implementing disaster risk reduction in their cities and communities. The objective of EMI’s Cluster Cities Project (CCP) is to build a coalition of informed leaders, promote peer-to-peer knowledge sharing, and support the implementation of sound DRR practices at the local level. The 2007 Americas Megacities Forum is undertaken to support that objective.

As a contribution to the local implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action, the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI) and the Jakarta Provincial Government, in partnership with the Indonesia Institute of Technology - Bandung, ProVention Consortium, Pacific Disaster Center, UNDP/BCPR, and UN-ISDR, will gather together disaster risk reduction (DRR) practitioners in Asia on 24-26 October 2007 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Asia Megacities Forum 2007 aims to provide a venue for sharing sound practices in urban DRR.

Aside from Jakarta, the Forum will see representations from EMI partners in Metro Manila, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Kobe, Mumbai, Dhaka, Tashkent, Istanbul, Tehran, Amman, and Wellington. Representatives from multilateral organizations, researchers, experts and practitioners from other cities have also expressed their interest to participate in the Forum.

The first day of the Forum will be held jointly with the participants of the Asia Network of Major Cities 21 (ANMC 21), which is having its congress in Jakarta on 23-25 October 2007.

Background

WBISD and WBIGM are jointly offering a two-day workshop to partner organizations of the Disaster Risk Management Program. The workshop aims to (i) facilitate the migration of the on-line disaster risk management learning program to Moodle and (ii) ensure the smooth continuation of the program delivery by the partner organizations. Moodle has all the standard features of the learning management system (LMS) that supports a content-driven learning model (i.e., tools for course structuring, presenting text and multimedia, interactivity, quizzes and assessments). In addition, Moodle provides a pool of tools, such as journals, discussions, etc., to promote interaction and social networking among participants by sharing ideas, collaborating in small groups, discussing, and reflecting on experiences to develop understanding together. Moodle, within its short existence has already attracted a large and diverse user community over 32,000 sites with more than 1 million courses using over 75 languages in over 175 countries.

The main objective of this workshop is to create capacity in partner organizations of WBI disaster risk management program in the development, facilitation, teaching, delivery and project administration of disaster management online courses in Moodle. It eyes the staff of the National Disaster Coordinating Council and the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative as the ones who will be responsible for further improvement, facilitation, teaching, delivery and project management of the WBI-NDCC disaster risk management online courses in Moodle.

During the first day, the participants will be introduced to the standard features of the Moodle in the context of disaster risk management courses, to its interface, and the reasons why WBI switched from VLE to Moodle. They will also learn about WBI’s initial experience in migration and in developing and delivering Moodle courses. The interactivity of the training is guaranteed through exercises with course settings and formats. On the second day more advanced topics will be introduced (dialogues, assignments, tests, surveys, workshops, grading, etc.) Experts will get familiarized how to identify the necessary tools in preparing successful disaster risk management on-line courses for delivery in Moodle. They will also have a discussion on administration, instructor and student interactions and how to establish a motivating environment for learning. The workshop will end with a summary and questions-answers session.
