On August 28, 2006, the Pacific Disaster Center and the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative successfully organized a two-hour special session on Megaicity Risk for the International Disaster Reduction Conference held in Davos-Switzerland on August 28 to September 1, 2006.
The session was very well attended, the convenor Dr. Friedeman Wenzel, EMI vice-chair made the opening remarks, and invited four introductory presentations, the first one, an implementation model for megacities disaster risk management by Dr. Fouad Bendimerad discussed the methodology and approach developed by EMI in the last two years, Ms. Tara Ledesma, from the EMI Secretariat discussed a specific application of this strategy in Metro Manila, Jeannette Fernandez, 3cd Program component 1 coordinator introduced tools and practical training for Disaster Risk Management developed by the program, and finally Dr. Omar Cardona introduced a recent application for Megacities Indicators for Urban Seismic Risk and Disater Risk Management, with an application for Metro Manila. Finally, the floor was invited to participate in an open discussion moderated by Ms. Shirley Mattingly, 3cd Program director, to learn about its concerns and recommendations for future development of the program. Dr. Allen Clark, PDC executive director addressed the audience with important closing remarks focusing on the need to develop a common understanding and joint efforts for risk reduction in Megacities in Asia and around the world.
Jeannette Fernandez was also invited to present the megacity disaster risk management knowledge base (MEGA-KNOW) and the Internet Map Viewers (MEGA-VIEW) as tools for enhanced risk communication and e-learning options, on the special session organized by UNESCO for the Euro-Mediterranean Region on August 29, 2006.
