Euro-Mediterranean Cluster Cities Meeting 2003

The Euro-Meditarranean Cluster Cities Meeting, held in Naples, Italy on December 19-20, 2003, was co-organized with the MedSafe Secretariat, the University of Naples Frederico II and the Municipality of Naples. The meeting was attended by representatives from Algiers, Cairo, Istanbul, Tehran as well as Quito (Ecuador) and Kobe (Japan). The Cluster Cities Project is partially sponsored by a grant from the Disaster Management Facility at the World Bank

First Asia Cluster Cities Workshop

The International Workshop on Disaster Management, held on December 4-6, 2003 with the theme Reducing Urban Risk Through International Cooperation, was organised by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, in cooperation with Government of Maharashtra, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative. The workshop had a very comprehensive agenda covering almost all aspects of disaster management. Over 250 delegates participated in the workshop, including 40 international participants from 10 other countries.

Americas Cluster Cities Workshop 2003

The Workshop on Hazard Reduction and Response in Metropolitan Regions was held in the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA on Mar 17-18, 2003. This was particated in by city administrators and university researcher from different metropolitan regions in the EMI Americas Cluster Cities, with the participation of academicians from various universities in Asia.

Istanbul Earthquake Master Plan

The Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative through its chairman, Dr. Fouad M. Bedimerad, participated in the development of an Earthquake Master Plan for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). The EMP will serve as the principal internal guide for all earthquake risk management actions undertaken by IMM. EMI had been helping IMM establish an earthquake management program for Istanbul since after the 1999 Marmara earthquakes.
